The Women's Army Corps (WAC) was the women's branch of the US Army. It was created as an auxiliary unit, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942, and converted to full status as the WAC in 1943. Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby, the wife of a prominent politician and publisher in Houston, Texas. About 150,000 American women served in the WAAC and WAC during World War II. Groover was born in Washington, D.C., and educated at George Washington University (A.B. 1924, LL.B 1932, S.J.D. 1942). She was a lawyer in the solicitor's office of the Veterans' Administration (1931-1941) before entering the Women's Army Corps, where she was on active duty for four years and promoted to Lt. Colonel. She served as executive officer to Col. Oveta Culp Hobby, Director of the WAC, and as acting director in her absence. Groover retired in 1959. From the description of P...
